40 Years is a long, long time, and VARMS has been around for that long. This publication cannot hope to cover every event in the 40 year history of VARMS and why should it, that has already been done very well by Ex-President and Life Member Des Bayliss and is available through the VARMS website? and it is a very good read, chock full of lots of good ?stuff?.
This is merely a lighthearted ramble through those pages of history highlighting some memorable occasions, some not so memorable, but most of them highly significant and guaranteed (we hope) to awaken some long lost memories. A few members have been press-ganged, horsewhipped, or gently coaxed into providing their own unique insight into certain personal happenings...many thanks to them, and we have also included a few humorous excursions thrown in for good measure. Photographs have normally been submitted along with articles. However, with the compilation pages owners names and submissions have been omitted to save space and let us cram more in. But in truth we have probably forgottem them. Humour has always been an integral part of Aspectivity right from the start, however time plays tricks and cartoons may have been mismatched with events although they remain topical.
Ifffff we have omitted anything, or anybody, that you feel should have been included then we humbly apologise. However, if you write it up and submit it to Aspectivity, in the normal manner, I have no doubt that it will get published in due course and will, of course, be available for the 50th update. So to those members who promised faithfully, but failed to meet the deadline,...keep going we need that stuff !. As for as the contents and photos ...ask yourselves a few questions. Where ? When ? What? and Who ? ?..Oh, yes?...the inevitable do I want one ?. As far as an index and order of events go?.there isn?t one...the main thing is that they all fitted.
Finally it would be unforgiveable if we didn?t mention the invaluable contribution that our wives and loved ones have made over the years from making our sambo?s to that invaluable support and lastly for holding back that sigh of relief until we were out of sight and earshot!?.. ?He?s gone... at last !?
Going back through some of the old mags it was quite strange to see what happened back in those dim and distant days of the late 60?s and then the 70?s. Things that newcomers cannot hope to comprehend?.. such as the shear size and weight of those basic valve and reed radio?s, to get a plan from overseas took upwards of 5 weeks and there was no superglue or epoxy. Electric motors generated huge electrical interference and heatshrink film hadn?t been invented yet. Photocopiers and fax machines as yet unheard of and computer radios were still miles away and even servo reversing was still a long way off but there were things to brighten the day. Remember the smell of Dope?. and to stand behind a Diesel engine revving it?s head off and get a lungful of those ether fumes. The exasperation as you water tightened your tissue covering then shrunk it with dope?.. before putting your finger through it as you launched it!. Deac?s? there?s a name to remember along with Allen Mercury, or ED and Dooling or K&B to name a but a few. Who?s first radio was a Kraft with those huge servos and how many wires did they have ? Magazines, mainly from overseas had good, informative articles and sketches in them and kit reviews that told the truth !. Information was paramount and exchanged freely to improve our hobby. You could buy a kit and then had endless hours of enjoyment cutting out all the pieces before creating a model, a creation to saviour. Rubber...now there?s a thing of the past... and when was the first time a movie camera was strapped to a plane...well the earliest I could find in Aspectivity was the 70?s and it was big camera. Aerotow is common today but did you know that they did a triple aerotow up at Swan hill in the early 90?s?..but enough of my waffle they are your memories so get reading and ?...ENJOY YOUR MEMORIES??????...
